TOPS knives

Here’s the list of wicked cool (and wicked sharp) new blades from TOPS Knives, as we learn about ’em.

(Oct. 21)

This month, TOPS released two new knives.  The A-Klub is the first female-designed TOPS knife, and the TOPS Poker is a new Craig Powell design.

Here’s what they have to say about them:

A-Klub

TOPS is known for a few things: differentially heat treated 1095 blades, over-built unique designs, and working with outside designers (among other things). This knife hits all of those categories and is also the first to be released by TOPS that was actually designed by a woman. Amanda Kaye is probably best known for having appeared on Naked and Afraid. She is no stranger to hard work having grown up hunting and learning Native American survival skills. The A-Klubwas even designed based on influences from Native American war clubs.

TOPS Poker

Loosely based on a Kiridashi, TOPS’ GM Craig designed the TOPS Poker as a sort of last-resort self-defense knife that will also excel as a general-purpose EDC knife. Craig came up with the idea after making a Kiridashi by hand in his spare time. Holding the finished knife, it became apparent it would also make an excellent tool for self-defense, so the design was modified to include a finger-ring. You’ll find regardless of the reason you choose to carry the Poker, it will be up to the task.

Street Scalpel 2.0

Here’s what TOPS has to say about it:

The original TOPS Knives Street Scalpel has been around for quite a few years now. There are a number of reasons that LEOs, active duty military, and everyday citizens love it. Its concealability is one of the main reasons, but it’s also extremely stout and strong for its size, so it can handle some tough tasks.

TOPS Knives Street Scalpel 2.0
The redesigned handle offers more of a finger guard and the blade steel is thinner at 3/16” to offer a finer edge.

Take all of the positives of the original, make it slightly lighter, and reconfigure the handle, and you have the Street Scalpel 2.0. Made using 3/16″ stock instead of 1/4″, the 2.0 will be a better slicer, but still has plenty of strength for those tougher jobs. The sheath has been changed to allow multiple carry options including appendix, IWB, OWB, scout, or any way else you can think of by rearranging the included beta loop straps. Whether you’re looking for a strong EDC fixed blade, or a combat knife to help get you out of a bad situation, the Street Scalpel 2.0 is up to the task.

  • Overall Length:7.0”
  • Blade Length:3.13”
  • CuttingEdge:2.75”
  • BladeThickness:0.19”
  • BladeSteel:1095RC56-58
  • BladeFinish:BlackTraction

Devil’s Claw 2

From TOPS Knives:

The Original Devil’s Claw was designed to be a deep conceal knife with a handle that is short on purpose for concealment in almost any outfit. Of course, the design was so reminiscent of karambits that it was only a matter of time before it got a makeover to become one.

TOPS Knives Devil's Claw 2
Redesigned with a longer handle that has a ring on the end.

The blade shape, materials, and thicknesses are the same on the Devil’s Claw 2 as those from the original. The hawkbill blade shape is a proven design for utility and defense tactics. It bites deep on pulling cuts and on slashes. So whether you’re using it for self-defense or opening boxes, it’ll do the job quick and easy. The only real update between this and the original is that the handle has been extended to fit the user’s full hand and the ring added to the pommel as is found on karambits the world over. The longer handle with the ring on the end provides the user with options that aren’t available with the original version (just remember the trade-off is that the new version is slightly more difficult to conceal).

  • Overall Length:7.38”
  • Blade Length:3.13”

Bull Trout

According to TOPS:

EDC knives can mean many different things to many people. In 2018, TOPS Knives chose EDC knives as the category for the 3rd annual employee design challenge. Out of all of the entries received, the Bull Trout was hands down the winner. It was designed by Martin Murillo, who is an avid fisherman/outdoorsman and is the shipping manager at TOPS. So when he sat down to design the knife, his experience processing the fish he catches played a major role.

Image of TOPS Knives Bull Trout
The Bull Trout makes a great EDC knife.

As did everyday utility tasks like those you might expect when working with packaging materials all day long. The bull Trout is small and light enough to carry easily every day. The 154 cm stainless steel blade requires little to no maintenance and will hold its edge for quite some time. The brown burlap handles and chocolate leather sheath look as good as they function. Everything about the knife shows that it’s designed to look good on your hip and work just as well.

  • Overall Length:6.13”
  • Blade Length:2.75”

TOPS Nata

Here’s what TOPS has to say about it:

Many useful tools have come from the Japanese over the years. The TOPS Knives Nata (which translates in this context roughly to hatchet) is one that hasn’t seen as much of the limelight as weapons like the katanaor EDC tools like the kiridashi. However, Nata’s simplistic design complements its functionality perfectly.

TOPS Knives - Nata
Clear Brush, prune branches with this interestingly designed small chopper.

TOPS’ version of the Nata blends the traditional Japanese style with American grit. The wide rectangular blade keeps mass behind the entire length of the edge, which makes it chop better than most knives of its size. Chopping power is also enhanced by the canted handle.TOPS version has a standard flat grind on both sides of the blade rather than the chisel or single-beveled style that many Japanese tools have. It is also a full-tang knife just like all TOPS fixed-blades are. The thick, well-contoured handles provide a comfortable grip and the simple out-the-front sheath makes it easy.

  • blade Length:6.13”

Fieldcraft 3.5

According to TOPS:

The Fieldcraft by Brothers of Bushcraft has been one of the best all-around hard-use bushcraft knives on the market since it was released and still is to this day. That is why it’s available with several finishes, two different steels, a slew of handle options, and a leather or Kydex sheath as standard.

TOPS Knives - Fieldcraft 3.5
The Fieldcraft 3.5 works as a small camp knife, EDC, and a small game hunting knife.

Since that time, a folding version of the Fieldcraft has also been made. Now it’s time for a different size. Clearly, with all of that success, many people have requested many changes and different options. One of them that a lot of people seem to agree would be great is a smaller version. This is why TOPS Knives created the Fieldcraft 3.5. It’s a smaller, slightly slimmer version of the original. It’s got TOPS’ modified Scandigrind, black traction coating, tan canvas Micarta handles, and a great Kydex sheath. The 3 5/8″ blade length is an excellent size for most cutting tasks. So this knife will excel as a bushcrafter, hunting knife, camp knife, and even as a fixed-blade EDC.

Specs:

  • Overall length:8.25”
  • blade length:3.75”

HAKET Lumberjack

From TOPS:

The original HAKET (Hawk and Knife Emergency Tool) was debuted at the 2010 SHOT Show. Designed to be a survival tool that could be used as a hatchet, spike, knife, scraper, and for other survival purposes, it was a popular tool for several years. While a lot of people enjoyed the small size of the heads for storage and survival use, there are many that also wanted a larger cutting surface on the main hatchet head. Enter the Lumberjack.

TOPS Knives HAKET Lumberjack
The HAKET blade can be attached in a few different ways.

On this head, the knife side is the same as the originals, but the ax head is a 4.5” cutting edge. We’ve also swapped out the leather blade covers for Kydex and upgraded from the basic pouch to the deluxe pouch for carrying. This makes the HAKET an especially handy tool for bug out bags, to throw in the truck, hiking kits, etc. because of its lightweight and multi-function design.

Specs:

  • Overall length: 15.0”
  • Blade length: 4.5”

SXS Skullcrusher’s Extreme Sidekick

According to TOPS:

TOPS Knives “Skullcrusher’s Xtreme Blade” (SXB) was designed for the Warrior Survivalist to aid in their survival not only in the wild but on the battlefield as well. Extreme Situations require an extreme Blade, and the SXB meets that demand and then some! Skullcrusher’s Xtreme Sidekick has now been developed as just that, a sidekick to the BX. The SXS is a “small” version of the SXB meant to complement it while out in the field. Small to EJ, and when compared with the SXB, but most will consider this a mid-sized knife.

TOPS Knives SXS Extreme Skullcrusher's Sidekick
This is the slimmed-down version of the SXB that
many have been asking for.

The basic blade shape has remained the same, but the handle has been modified to accommodate some different usage options. There are holes in the handle front and back to provide lanyard and lashing options. The sheath is Kydex with beta loops designed to give the user multiple mounting options, such as scout style, appendix, horizontal, IWB, on a pack, on a vest, etc. Just remove the screws once the snap is open and reposition the straps however you would you prefer to carry it. With a blade length of approximately 5”, this knife finds itself right at home with survivalists, but it’ll also make a great all-around camp knife and will also function very well as a hunting knife.

Specs:

  • Overall length:10.13”

Rapid Strike

According to TOPS Knives:

Everything about the Rapid Strike makes it an excellent combatives blade. The cutting edge is long enough for good slashing cuts and thrusts. It can be single or double-edged to meet legal requirements or be even more dangerous. The G10 handle is strong and grippy and combined with the recessed jimping that goes all the way around the handle, it’s easy to keep it in your hand when you need it the most.

TOPS Knives - Rapid Strike
It’ll work on a belt, in a
boot, on a vest, etc.

The sheath was designed to allow for a combat grip straight out of the sheath (meaning the hand doesn’t have to be readjusted to grip the handle properly after it’s removed from the sheath). The thin blade material and narrow profile take up little space on a belt, on a vest, in a boot, or wherever else you choose to carry it. 154CM stainless steel was chosen to provide a strong blade with little maintenance needed to keep it clean and sharp. So whether you’re deployed to one of the current hot spots around the world, serving and protecting in your neighborhood, or just a prepared citizen who wants something to help get you home safe, theRapid Strike is perfect for you. Plus it makes a great steak knife too.

Specs:

  • Overall length: 8.63”

Quickie

Who doesn’t need a Quickie? Here’s what TOPS says about it:

The Quickie is made for people who live in an increasingly uncertain world. Designed with law enforcement in mind. It’s a “3-finger” karambit, meaning the 3rd finger away from the blade should be placed in the hole.

TOPS Knives - Quickie
TOPS Knives – Quickie

This knife has a very specific purpose and uses in mind. By putting the finger hole on the 3rd finger and then leaving a nub after that, it gives the user some ability to still use the hand while holding the knife. For police officers in particular, this makes it an excellent option for a weak hand weapon. The knife can be drawn when the firearm is unavailable. Then once the firearm becomes available, the officer isn’t faced with the impossible decision of either dropping or trying to re-sheath the knife in the middle of an altercation. The Quickie was designed for concealment and ease of use. It’s 1/8” thick with a low profile sheath and clip. It’s short length aids in concealment as well. So whether you’re on or off duty, the Quickie is a great back-up option for self-defense.

Specs:

  • Overall Length: 5.0”
  • Blade Length: 1.63”
  • Cutting Edge: 1.13”
  • Secondary Cutting Edge: 1.5”
  • Blade Thickness: 0.13”
